How can I tell if I'm receiving the Homestead benefit?

You can verify whether you have the Homestead Exemption benefit by reviewing your real property tax bill. The location will vary slightly depending on the format of your bill.

In a box near the top-right of the bill, labeled either "Values and Prior Year Information" or "Value Information", there will be a line item called the Homestead Exemption Value or Homestead Exemption Amount. As long as this number is higher than 0 with a maximum value of 50,000, you are receiving the exemption benefit.

Real property tax bills have a Property ID or PIN that starts with "R" or "M" (for example, R100 00D 010 002B 0000). If you do not have your real property tax bill, you can find a copy of it on the Treasurer's tax bill lookup here: Tax Bill Lookup

Legal Residence Required

This exemption is not to be confused with the 4% Legal Residence or Primary Residence tax rate. Please refer to the article "Difference between Legal Residence and Homestead" to learn more.
